Fraud is big business. Don’t let yourself be fooled, and don’t be afraid to ask for help if you have been scammed. You are not alone. Sadly, it is a global business and they are very good at what they do, as you can learn from this AARP.ORG article. The easiest way to avoid being scammed is to hang-up on the caller, or delete the email, but that is much easier said than done. Here are a few tips to remember that can help you avoid becoming a victim:
- If it for something you have won, but costs money or detailed personal information to claim the prize it’s likely as scam.
- If it is a solicitation for something (e.g. donation or purchase) that does appeal to you and appears from a recognized source. Simply hang-up, delete, and then contact the desired organization directly through their website or phone number.
- Lastly, if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.
