Money is the root of all evil is an often misstated and misused quote. Money is a means and is inanimate, so it cannot be evil in and of itself. How it is used determines whether it is evil or good. The correct quote, rooted in scripture is: ‘the love of money is the root of all evil.’
1 Timothy 6: 6 reads: “Contentment is itself great wealth. After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it. So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content. But people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.”
Once the longing for money comes, the longing also comes for what money can give – superfluous things. The more we have, the more we will want. Our wants will increase, for one thing leads to another and the result will be endless dissatisfaction.
Let us make sure that our money, whether a little or a lot, is used for good!
