A House Divided (Can not Stand)!

Many of us have faced, or will face, the dilemma of splitting an inheritance that may include an asset not easily split, like a home. Cash and other liquid assets can easily be divided, but a physical asset like a house or antique car, not so easy. Creative solutions will be needed. For example, maybe one heir receives the house, and the other the liquid assets, so long as the values are fair and equal, or at least equitable. Unfortunately, arguments can ensue, and family members can become divided.

The hope is that everyone will act fairly and consider the good of the others involved. There is no perfect solution, but one that is fair can save a lot of headaches, and more importantly, save family relationships. As we used to joke in business deals, if both parties are equally upset, then it must be a fair deal.

Luke 12: 13 speaks of inheritance, whereby someone in the crowd called out to Jesus, “Teacher, please tell my brother to divide our father’s estate with me.” Jesus replied, “Friend, who made me a judge over you to decide such things as that?” Then he said, “Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.”

If any or all involved exhibit greed, a fair deal, or any deal for that matter, will remain elusive. Act fairly, with due consideration to the others wants and needs, and an amicable sharing in the inheritance is far more likely!
